Water Quality Pond- Retention Pond

At Aquatic Features, we manage ponds to create a balance so that they can protect our water supply as intended by TCEQ, be visually pleasing, and support fish and wildlife in the Austin, TX area.

Regular maintenance keeps aquatic plants and algae at a balanced level and inflow and outflow structures and bank erosion are monitored. Unsightly trash needs to be picked up in the pond and sediment levels monitored.
When ponds need to be balanced, our biologists select the best method of treatment based on the target problem, the current seasonal conditions, and government regulations that dictate chemical amendment applications. We at Aquatic Features, are TDA Licensed Commercial Applicators in Aquatic Pest Control. We prepare and provide our clients with all permits regarding algaecide and herbicide applications under TCEQ General Permit TXG870000.

About Water Quality Ponds

Many neighborhoods and commercial parks In the Austin, TX area contain ponds that are not managed due to residents or staff not knowing the function and purpose of the water quality pond. Understanding the function and common problems associated with a water quality pond will help stake holders manage issues like nutrient pollution and excessive algae growth.

The most important component of community pond management  is education.  Communication is fundamental when establishing a pond management program.  Every pond is unique in its properties and the expectations of residents should be defined accordingly. There are instances where inherent design flaws, (such as ponds being built too shallow) or physical changes over time (sedimentation or erosion) make ponds very difficult to maintain.

With communication in mind, we provide monthly or quarterly reports to the pond owners that cover activities done and the pond elements checked and their status. Photos of treatments and issues are also sent.
Weed and algae control is a necessity for most ponds and lakes. Excess aquatic weeds and algae can detract from the beauty of the pond and inhibit the ponds functionality. Stagnant water provides optimal breeding habitat for mosquitoes and unhealthy water quality. Uncontrolled shoreline plants can harbor adult mosquitoes, snakes, rats, and other unwanted pests and they can appear overgrown and dysfunctional. As a result, poorly managed ponds can not only be an eyesore but a potential human health concern.
